A: Stevia is now being recommended for diabetics (and for anyone wanting to prevent diabetes) by many health care providers. Stevia is an all-natural, non-caloric sweetener made from the leaves of a South American shrub called “stevia rebaudiana” and several studies have found that it stimulates the release of insulin and normalizes the response to glucose particularly in type 2 (insulin-resistant) diabetes. Because stevia can lower blood sugar, if you’re taking drugs for diabetes, please check with your health care provider first prior to using stevia. By the way, you can find stevia in most markets and natural foods stores in liquid or powder form.
