Q: I’ve just been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Can you help me?
A: Yes I can. A number of studies, especially in Germany, have been conducted on the treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) including acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicinals. These studies have documented that TCM successfully treats IBS in an effective, safe, and drug-free manner. IBS is a motility disorder involving abnormal movement of the small and large intestines. Symptoms include abdominal pain, constipation and/or diarrhea often occurring in alternating episodes. It is estimated that 10-20% of all Americans have IBS and it’s three times more common in women than men. Currently, the cause of IBS is unknown. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the symptoms of IBS are seen as being primarily driven by emotional upset, anxiety and worry. Other causes of IBS that TCM recognizes include overeating and consumption of unhealthy over-processed foods. Acupuncture treatment of IBS has a powerful regulatory effect on bowel motility, and, additionally, herbal medicinals are used to both soothe and strengthen the intestinal system.
